Solar panels are a great way to interact more positively with your world. They use just a tiny fraction of the near-infinite energy that the sun gives us every day to power our lives. Supposedly you can generate enough energy to power your house and make money on your electric bill at the same time. You can even use RV solar panels to power your camper for a nearly infinite camping trip.
Most people see the benefits of having a solar system, but they pale when they see the $25,000 dollar price tag. On the other hand, a few people have discovered that they can build their own solar panels, and save a ton of money, and gain all the benefits of solar power. Here's what you need to do:
1. Find an instruction manual. Seriously, just spend fifty bucks for quality instruction. It will be worth thousands to you in the future. With the amount of heartache and wasted time you save, this is one investment that will easily pay for itself. Stay away from YouTube instructional videos, those people don't know what they're talking about.
2. Find the solar cells online. This is the core of the solar panel, the surface which actually turns sunlight into electricity. If you want to make your own as a science project, it can be really fun and entertaining, but if you're trying to produce power, better just to buy them. The cost about $70 per panel.
3. Find the other materials for the case. This should only take you a few minutes and under $30 per panel. I've seen sites claiming that you can get this stuff even cheaper. You also need to get the electronics you need (eg. wiring, converters, volt meter, etc.) that you need to complete the project. This will vary a bit for everybody, depending on what you plan to do, but your manual should tell you everything you need to know.
4. Schedule a fun building strategy. This makes a great family activity or a block party. Think of it as a 21st century barn raising. People will definitely be interested and volunteer to help out if they know what you're up to.
So there you have it. It's actually very easy and affordable to build your own solar panals. Now it's time to get of the web and get it done. You'll be saving money on your bills and helping the earth in no time.
