Affiliate marketers are always on the lookout for new paid sources of traffic. Most people are familiar with PPC marketing, but not many have tried out contextual advertising sources. You may also see contextual advertising called pay-per-view (PPV) or cost-per-view (CPV) advertising.

With contextual advertising, computers with a specific type of adware installed will popup an advertisement to a user. Many companies install adware on a users computer in exchange for free games, toolbars, and screensavers. One example is Gamevance which installs its adware application in exchange for allowing the user to play the free games on its network. Keep in mind that adware is not necessarily spyware and most reputable companies make sure that their users are explicitly informed about what they are installing and ensure their adware can be easily uninstalled as well.

When utilizing contextual advertising, you can bid on different keywords or urls. So when a user visits that keyword or url, a popup will display on their computer with your ad on it. You are free to direct link to an offer, or design your own landing page from scratch. Just remember that you are limited by the size of the popup. On a PPV network like MediaTraffic, you will be limited to a space of 750 x 550 pixels. Therefor, it is important to ensure that your landing page is designed to work in a limited space.

Costs per popup will vary depending on the competition for the keyword or url. Minimum bids on the networks can get as low as 1 cent per view, but more competitive targets can cost you somewhat more. Just remember you are getting charged per view. Regardless of whether the visitor ignores your popup or immediately closes it, you still need to pay.

PPV is getting more popular because it seems easier to get started with compared to PPC. Make sure though, that you are set to invest enough time and money to test. If you aren't careful, CPV traffic can blow through your budget very fast. Still, when you discover the right offer you have the potential to make an enormous ROI from it.

Contextual advertising has the potential to be an excellent traffic source, so use it to your advantage. Not everyone will be successful with it, but there are many who are finding it quite lucrative. Give contextual advertising a shot, and see if you can't start making some money with it.
