The first step of marketing is to actually get people to come look at what you're selling. You do this with ads placed on websites and other locations across the internet. However, very few of the people who go to your links will make a purchase, so you need to bring in as many as possible. As such, it would be very problematic to have to pay for all ads, even failed ones, as you might have had to before. But an answer came in what is PPC.
In the past, you would have had to pay to place an ad somewhere regardless of whether it actually attracted any attention or not. You already weren't going to get a lot of the people who came to your website to buying anything so having to pay in some sense for those who weren't even going to come in the first place was definitely a waste for you.
It's hard to blame advertisers for being annoyed with this situation. Even though there were different things that determined prices, they were getting a bad deal. But when pay per click eventually came about, it acted as something of a revolution. Finally, there was a system in place that made spending money a better process for the buyers involved.
It seems we first started to see these trends when Google AdSense was released by the home company in 1999. Google was already becoming a recognized and growing name at that point in terms of their search engine capabilities, so it was only natural they extended themselves even further. Now advertisers could work with good keywords.
The main point here was that you only had to pay for the amount of people who actually clicked through an ad, as opposed to those that just looked at it. In addition to not having to pay up front, there was also the fact that selling techniques were improved since submitted ads were paired with the kinds of websites they'd be associated with.
Obviously it saves a lot of money to not have to pay for more than you need to. Yet website owners had their own reasons to appreciate the program, because they benefited a lot from the program as well. In putting ads in many places and bringing a lot of people to their sites, they managed to still make considerable profits from this process.
A lot of hosts are able to make so much that they can run their sites though the system and have more to spare. But it's not just small sites that make use of this. Even large ones like MySpace do, and wouldn't survive without the help of the program. It benefits everyone involved, getting customers to advertisers and profits to the site owners.
By now, it should be easy to see why people appreciate this tool so much. Of course, there are other options as well, but Google AdSense is the first and is still considered to be one of the best. No matter what, though, it's important to recognize all there is to offer in terms of PPC, no matter what aspect of online business you are involved in yourself.
